How to Call CQ on the Phone Modes

The Art of Calling CQ: Preparation, SSB Rules, and Operating Etiquette

The golden rule of amateur radio is simple: „Always listen first!“ Thorough prep and strict bandplan compliance ensure you avoid causing interference (QRM) to existing contacts while maintaining technical accuracy.

1. Pre-Transmission Steps and Frequency Checking

Before keying your microphone, follow these essential procedural steps:

  1. Select the Right Band: Choose an appropriate band based on distance and current ionospheric propagation (consult MUF charts).
  2. Check the Bandplan: Confirm that your target frequency is allocated for phone (SSB) operation.
  3. Sideband Standard (LSB vs. USB):
    • Below 10 MHz, Lower Sideband (LSB) is standard.
    • Above 10 MHz, Upper Sideband (USB) is standard.
  4. Band Edges and Bandwidth: An SSB signal requires at least 3 kHz bandwidth. LSB extends 3 kHz below the suppressed carrier frequency, while USB extends 3 kHz above.
Critical Band Edges: Never transmit LSB below 3603 kHz (or 1853 kHz on 160m) to avoid out-of-band emissions. Never transmit USB above 14347 kHz.
  5. Check Frequency Occupancy: Even on a seemingly clear frequency, always inquire: "Is this frequency in use?". Stations in a skip zone may be in an active contact. If unheard, ask a second time before transmitting.

2. Calling CQ Efficiently

A CQ call should be concise, rhythmic, and clear. Always use standard IARU phonetics when pronouncing your callsign.

Standard CQ Call Format:
CQ CQ CQ this is LZ2ZZZ, Lima Zulu Two Zulu Zulu Zulu calling CQ and listening.

Common CQ Errors to Avoid:

  • Do NOT end with „Over“: „Over“ means „over to you“, but you have not established contact with anyone yet.
  • Do NOT end with „QRZ“: „QRZ“ means „Who is calling me?“. Nobody was calling prior to initiating your CQ.

3. Special Operations: Split Working and VHF/UHF Repeaters

Mode / Special Practice Proper Operating Procedure
Split Frequency Working Always specify your listening frequency clearly (e.g., "...listening 5 to 10 up" or "...listening on 14295"). Verify the RX frequency is clear first!
VHF/UHF Repeaters Do not call CQ on a repeater. Simply state your callsign and status: "LZ2ZZZ mobile listening on R0".
