LZ2KBS – Veliko Tarnovo Palace of Pioneers

LZ2KBS — Pioneer Palace Radio Station at Tsarevets in Veliko Tarnovo

The pioneer club station LZ2KBS was established at the Pioneer Palace in Veliko Tarnovo, located on the historic Tsarevets hill. During the 1950s and 1960s, it served as the birthplace of amateur radio for dozens of local youth.

Initial Morse telegraphy classes were taught by instructor Siyka Yancheva. Under her guidance, young pioneers learned Morse code, Q-codes, and basic operating procedures.

1. Training, Early Operators, and QSL Exchange

By the mid-1950s, the station produced its first active operators, including Ivan Vuchkov, Stefka Ivanova, and young Nikolay Pisarov (later LZ2JF – sk).

On January 7, 1957, top students Nikolay Pisarov and Vesselin Zaiakov (LZ3CQ – sk) logged their first live contacts from LZ2KBS. The station quickly established QSL exchanges across Europe and worldwide.
