A minimum of three symbols are used to indicate their main characteristics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First symbol<\/strong> \u2013 type of modulation of the main carrier;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second symbol<\/strong> \u2013 carrier type;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third character<\/strong> \u2013 type of transmitted information;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><em>Note<\/em><\/strong><em>: the fourth and fifth characters are added for the needs of the ITU Radio Regulations and are not mandatory.&lt; \/em&gt;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fourth character<\/strong> \u2013 details of the signal;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fifth character<\/strong> \u2013 type of multiplexing<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>First character<\/strong> \u2013 base carrier modulation type:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>N<\/strong> \u2013 unmodulated carrier;<\/li>\n<li><strong>A <\/strong>\u2013 amplitude modulation with two sidebands;<\/li>\n<li><strong>H<\/strong> \u2013 amplitude modulation with one sideband and full carrier;<\/li>\n<li><strong>R<\/strong> \u2013 amplitude modulation with one sideband and reduced\/variable carrier;<\/li>\n<li><strong>J<\/strong> \u2013 amplitude modulation with suppressed carrier;<\/li>\n<li><strong>B<\/strong> \u2013 amplitude modulation with independent sidebands;<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong> \u2013 amplitude modulation with rudimentary sideband;<\/li>\n<li><strong>F<\/strong> \u2013 frequency modulation;<\/li>\n<li><strong>G<\/strong> \u2013 phase modulation;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><em>Note<\/em><\/strong><em>: when frequency modulation (F) is noted, phase modulation (G) is also applicable. <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>D<\/strong> \u2013 joint amplitude and frequency-phase modulation;<\/li>\n<li><strong>P<\/strong> \u2013 sequence of unmodulated pulses;<\/li>\n<li><strong>K<\/strong> \u2013 pulse modulation;<\/li>\n<li><strong>L<\/strong> \u2013 amplitude-pulse modulation;<\/li>\n<li><strong>M<\/strong> \u2013 phase or time-pulse modulation;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q<\/strong> \u2013 frequency-phase pulse modulation;<\/li>\n<li><strong>V<\/strong> \u2013 combined modulation;<\/li>\n<li><strong>W<\/strong> \u2013 other cases where the carrier is modulated simultaneously or sequentially in amplitude, frequency, phase and\/or pulse;<\/li>\n<li><strong>X<\/strong> \u2013 all other cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second character<\/strong> \u2013 type of main carrier:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>0<\/strong> \u2013 no modulating signal;<\/li>\n<li><strong>1<\/strong> \u2013 one channel containing analog or digital information without using a modulating subcarrier, with the exception of time-pulse multiplexes;<\/li>\n<li><strong>2<\/strong> \u2013 one channel containing analog or digital information using a modulating subcarrier, excluding time-pulse multiplexes;<\/li>\n<li><strong>3<\/strong> \u2013 one channel containing analog information;<\/li>\n<li><strong>7<\/strong> \u2013 two or more channels containing analog or digital information;<\/li>\n<li><strong>8<\/strong> \u2013 two or more channels containing analog information;<\/li>\n<li><strong>9<\/strong> \u2013 composite system with one or more channels containing analog or digital information together with one or more channels containing analog information;<\/li>\n<li><strong>X<\/strong> \u2013 other cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third character<\/strong> \u2013 type of transmitted information<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>N<\/strong> \u2013 no information transmitted;<\/li>\n<li><strong>A<\/strong> \u2013 auditory telegraphy;<\/li>\n<li><strong>B<\/strong> \u2013 automatically accepted telegraphy;<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong> \u2013 fax;<\/li>\n<li><strong>D<\/strong> \u2013 data transmission, telemetry, remote control;<\/li>\n<li><strong>E<\/strong> \u2013 telephony;<\/li>\n<li><strong>F<\/strong> \u2013 television or video;<\/li>\n<li><strong>W<\/strong> \u2013 combination of the above;<\/li>\n<li><strong>X<\/strong> \u2013 other cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fourth character<\/strong> &#8211; signal details:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A<\/strong> \u2013 two-position code with elements of different number or duration;<\/li>\n<li><strong>B<\/strong> \u2013 two-position code with elements of the same number or duration without error correction;<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong> \u2013 two-position code with elements of the same number or duration with error correction;<\/li>\n<li><strong>D<\/strong> \u2013 a four-position code in which each position represents an element of the signal (one or more bits);<\/li>\n<li><strong>E<\/strong> \u2013 multi-position code in which each position represents an element of the signal (one or more bits);<\/li>\n<li><strong>F<\/strong> \u2013 multi-position code in which each position represents a symbol element;<\/li>\n<li><strong>G<\/strong> \u2013 sound for monophonic radio broadcasting;<\/li>\n<li><strong>H<\/strong> \u2013 sound for stereo or quadraphonic radio broadcasting;<\/li>\n<li><strong>J<\/strong> \u2013 sound for commercial needs (except for the next two categories);<\/li>\n<li><strong>K<\/strong> \u2013 sound for commercial needs with frequency inversion or band separation;<\/li>\n<li><strong>L<\/strong> \u2013 sound for commercial needs with independent frequency modulated control signals;<\/li>\n<li><strong>M<\/strong> \u2013 monochrome signal;<\/li>\n<li><strong>N<\/strong> \u2013 color signal;<\/li>\n<li><strong>W<\/strong> \u2013 combination of the above;<\/li>\n<li><strong>X<\/strong> \u2013 other cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fifth symbol<\/strong> \u2013 multiplexing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>N<\/strong> \u2013 no multiplexing;<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong> \u2013 code multiplexing;<\/li>\n<li><strong>F<\/strong> \u2013 frequency multiplexing;<\/li>\n<li><strong>T<\/strong> \u2013 time multiplexing;<\/li>\n<li><strong>W<\/strong> \u2013 combination of frequency and time multiplexing;<\/li>\n<li><strong>X<\/strong> \u2013 another type of multiplexing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Practical table for radio amateurs<\/h3>\n<p><strong>A1 &#8211;
