Note: The publication is aimed at Bulgarian readers and I am not sure if and how it should be translated into English.<\/em><\/p>\n

Everyone has wondered sometimes „Is this a knob or a knob?“ , „Jack, plug or connector?“ Here is a fairly logical suggestion, and everyone will decide for themselves whether to use it. I would be happy if you share your opinion in the comments.<\/p>\n

1. Main Controls<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Term<\/strong><\/td>\nDefinition<\/strong><\/td>\nMechanical\/Software Action<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n
Frequency Regulator<\/strong><\/td>\nThe main<\/strong> rotating element (Knob\/Encoder<\/strong>) used to move (set) the operating frequency (VFO).<\/td>\nRotation.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Multifunction or Multifunction Ring<\/strong><\/td>\nA secondary, rotating element located concentrically<\/strong> around Frequency regulator<\/strong>, which controls an additional function (e.g. fine tuning, noise reduction, waterfall adjustment, etc.)<\/td>\nRotation<\/strong> (concentric).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Knob<\/strong><\/td>\nA control device designed for smooth or stepwise adjustment of a value<\/strong> (e.g. gain, level).<\/td>\nRotation.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Plug<\/strong><\/td>\nThe<\/strong> male part of a connector, which is usually movable<\/strong> (at the end of a cable) and plugs into The Socket<\/strong>.<\/td>\nMale<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Connector, Coupling, Connector<\/strong><\/td>\nA general term for the pair<\/strong> (Socket and Plug) or for any device that provides an electrical connection between two pieces of equipment or between the equipment and an external cable, when it is not<\/strong> necessary to specify the gender.<\/td>\nGeneral<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Jack<\/strong><\/td>\nCan be used as a synonym for socket<\/strong> (especially in audio\/headphones\/microphones), plug, or for a specific type of connector (e.g. 3.5 mm jack). It is recommended to use it more as a synonym for Socket.<\/em><\/td>\nMost often female<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Terminal<\/strong><\/td>\nA device for temporarily or permanently connecting wires, often by a screw or spring mechanism, which provides a secure mechanical and electrical contact. For power, grounding, loudspeaker systems or antennas.<\/td>\nGeneral<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Terminal<\/strong><\/td>\n1.(Connection): Any end point at which an electrical connection can be made. Electrical contact point\/Terminal (e.g. battery terminal, circuit board terminal, ground terminal, battery terminal).
\n2.(Device): A complete input\/output device (e.g. computer terminal). A connector of a computer with a peripheral device<\/td>\n		General<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
4. Usage Guidelines<\/strong><\/h5>\n

To keep your standard as clear as possible, use these terms as follows:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Connector:<\/strong> Use this as the most general synonym<\/strong> for connector<\/strong>. If you don’t need to specify whether they are male or female, you can say „All connectors on the back panel“.<\/em><\/li>\n
  • Terminal:<\/strong> Use this only<\/strong> for connections that require mechanical attachment<\/strong> of bare wires, most commonly for:\n
      \n
    • Connecting a power cable.<\/li>\n
    • Connecting antenna or ground wires – screw (wing nut) or spring terminals.<\/li>\n
    • Connecting speakers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Terminal:<\/strong>\n
        \n
      • Use this to indicate the physical point (pin)<\/strong> of connection, not the entire mechanism. (e.g.: „Connect the ground wire to the GND terminal.“)<\/li>\n
      • Also use it to label terminals<\/strong> (e.g. the positive terminal of the battery<\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • When choosing a term for a control, try to describe the physical action<\/strong> with it:\n
          \n
        • Turn the knob.<\/em><\/li>\n
        • Press the button.<\/em><\/li>\n
        • Flip the switch.<\/em><\/li>\n
        • Plug the plug into the socket.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
