Does alcohol have a place in our diet
I will disappoint you – this is not a guide for proper drinking, no matter how it looks like it.
Alcohols are organic compounds containing one or more hydroxyl groups.
Knowledge of this, however, will hardly change our appetite for alcohol.
I write “alcohols” because there are different species and I certainly do not mean “vodka”, “whiskey”, “brandy”, “wine” and so on. Becomes speech for ethanol, methanol, cyclohexanol …
But we do not have to know that.
We will talk about alcohol, which is somewhat to drink. For ethanol. Others are very poisonous, or they are very hurt.
The word alcohol comes from the Arabic “al-cochol”. which means “the spirit of wine”. But we will not just talk about wine. In conversational language “alcohol” means alcoholic beverages containing a different amount of ethyl alcohol or ethanol.
Well, I’ll still mention a few chemical complexities …
Ethanol consists of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen of the chemical formula C2-H5-OH. (It is easy to remember with the phrase “Chip two, five more, ohhaa …”).
For the purposes of the alcohol industry, it is harvested through a complex fermentation process of fruits and cereals, in which our grandfathers are the most dedicated, and the consequences of the process – and the grandmothers.
More hardened drinkers make alcohol from whatever they eat, adding sugar and allowing it to ferment.
But no matter how it is harvested, we can safely say that ethanol is a carbohydrate, but not with 4 but with 7 calories per gram. This means that 50 grams of concentrate with 40% alcohol content carries us with 140 extra calories. With so much loads and a glass of wine. Some cocktails “bombard us” with 500 or more calories, sometimes with more than one standard lunch.
We usually teach our customers not the number of calories, but for alcohol this ban is eliminated! Count all the calories of each gram of alcohol test! Mandatory!
But the problem with alcohol is not only in excess calories, but also in how they affect the body. And not just as dizziness and loss of balance.
Alcohol influences the metabolism of a person. I’ve also seen a drunk duck, over-drunk with “drunken cherries,” but its metabolism is not our job now.
Ethanol absorption occurs mainly in the stomach and small intestine, and then circulates it to almost all organs of the body. It has the greatest impact on the central nervous system as it quickly and easily passes the blood-brain barrier. Through the nervous system, it has a highly depressing effect on a number of important processes. It also destroys a lot of nerve cells (and do not even calm down that it does not catch the calm!).
Ethanol is processed by the liver at an average rate of about 15 grams per hour, thereby slowing down and obstructing the normal course of liver function. Ie. further slows metabolism and recovery processes. For this reason, it is very important to avoid following a workout. Including beer!
Initially, ethanol is broken down to acetaldehyde, which is highly toxic. It shortens protein bonds – it generates a reactive form of oxygen that damages the proteins in the liver. If too much protein is damaged in the liver, cirrhosis occurs. The organism tries to “disable” acetaldehyde to relatively harmless acetate, but that does not help so much. Especially after prolonged use, at some point it does not last and …
How quickly conversion of ethanol through acetaldehyde to acetate will depend on the amount of alcohol absorbed and the individual characteristics of each organism. It also depends on the rate of alcohol intake to the liver itself. Part of it is retained in the bloodstream and accumulates in the liver untreated. It also depends on the food received before and during alcohol consumption. It can be said. that almost any food slows the intake of ethanol into the blood. the combination “meze-alcohol” turns out to be worse for your figure than the two, consumed individually.
The resulting acetate enters the mitochondria of the liver cells to produce energy and largely displaces fat as a source of energy, in a native language “stops burning”.
According to research, two small vodka suppresses fat degradation by 73% in a few hours. The situation is even worse if we add to the vodka a decent meat, as is usually the case in Bulgaria. Then the calories become much more than we can digest at once, and the excess accumulates in greasy fat stores.
As an extra “extra”, alcohol usually increases appetite, which further increases calorie intake.
As if I’m beginning to hear how you think, “I’m stopping all kinds of appetizers tomorrow!” Strange why I stop hearing about alcohol …
But it does not stop here. The metabolic pathway of ethanol continues with the production of many citrate (citric acid). The citrate can be called the binding link in the metabolism of alcohol and fructose, because in this process and from producing large quantities.
And we’ve all read the pictures on facebook (what else does it read?) That fructose also loads a lot of liver.
Combining alcohol with fructose is extremely poor. but unfortunately a very popular combination.
This is not even a cup of wine with a sliced apple in it or a sweet soft drink for a thinner (I see in your eyes a promise to drink now only with water as a thinner, which is a small step to quit alcohol and smile happy).
Here is a speech about mixing alcohol with a wide-spread energy drink with glucose-fructose syrup (or sugar, which is basically all that) – something I see everyday everywhere.
So, the first main conclusion we make is that if we hold on to our health, we should not combine alcohol with anything that damages the liver, such as fructose, medicines and, most of all, steroids!
Let’s take care of what we drink in the gym. Not everything is as harmless as the fitness instructors persuade us to be certified as such. Without being affected, but where there is a lot of muscle, I have noticed that a lot of brain does not grow.
That’s why – pure water with alcohol. And best – instead of alcohol. And without steroids and untested protein shakes!
And if we hold on to our figure, do not add caloric appetizers, but bet more salads and pure sources of protein.
The salads will satiate us without excess calories, which will reduce the appetite. They will delay the absorption of ethanol.
A protein will compensate for ethanol-protein synthesis.
Alcohol has a strong dehydrating effect. Which again means more water. Almost all chemical and physiological processes need an aquatic environment, let’s not deprive them of it.
Finally, let’s get back to the citric acid. When the body has a surplus of it, it fails to use it to produce energy. So the use of fat will not be at all. It will also break the acid-base balance in our body.
If we often look at the gym’s mirrors, even if we do sport there, we can hardly use this huge amount of excess energy. The liver begins to produce triglycerides and cholesterol that are dangerous to him and which he is trying to get rid of.
Well, yes, where it goes, throws them into the bloodstream. With all the negative consequences on it – straining, causing atherosclerosis, blocking the valves and any other negative effects and illnesses.
In one sentence – if we care about our own body, the only thing that can be said to be ours – let’s replace alcohol with clean water!
The mood will come from the pleasant people who surround us.
If they are not, change them!
